How can we support you?

Eating Disorders in Adolescents

If you feel your child may have an eating disorder, you’re likely feeling worried and unsure where to turn. In the first instance, we would encourage you to book an appointment to speak to your GP to determine the level of care your child may need. If your GP determines that your child can engage in community based Psychological services then our experienced team are here to support you.

At Illuminate Psychology, our clinicians are experienced in empowering families in treating their adolescent’s eating disorder. Using evidence based best practice - the Maudsley Approach Family Based Therapy (FBT), along with empathy, compassion and confidence, we’re here to help.

We’ll support you and your child through this difficult journey.

Eating Disorders in Adults

Concerned you or a loved one may have an eating disorder?

Eating disorders appear in different ways for different people, so it’s important that we take the time to understand how yours presents for you. No matter what your relationship with food or your body, we’ll work with you to bring light to the issue and move towards recovery together. As an inclusive, HAES focused practice, we are committed to practicing HAES principles and encouraging a world that, alongside us, celebrates bodies at every shape and size.

THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF EATING DISORDERS:

·       Anorexia Nervosa

·       Bulimia Nervosa

·       Binge Eating Disorder

·       Orthorexia

·       ARFID

·       Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED)

·       Body image concerns

·       Other compensatory behaviours, for example compulsive exercise, restrictive eating, concerns with weight loss or gain

Trauma

Trauma has devastating effects on an individual, and can extend to family life, work, learning, emotional regulation and relationships. It can have long lasting impacts on an individual, it changes a person’s emotional and behavioural responses, and unresolved trauma can leave people feeling hopeless and ashamed. To be able to overcome trauma people need to feel safe enough to open up their hearts and minds to new possibilities.

The question at the start of treatment might be, ‘What is wrong with me?’. Utilising trauma-informed care we look to understand ‘what happened to you’ to create the current symptoms or responses to situations, and develop a complete picture of your life– past and present – in order to provide effective care and treatment.

Anxiety

If you find yourself feeling anxious or worried, you’re not alone.

Feelings of anxiety and worry are a normal part of life, that everyone deals with from time to time (it can even be helpful in some instances). We worry about the things that are important to us, like our family, health, money, work, and this can help us make important decisions, but sometimes, it can be problematic. When anxiety impairs our daily functioning, your nervous system can become imbalanced.

Causes of anxiety are different for everyone and cannot always be avoided, but the ways we respond can be changed for the better with professional help and support.

If your anxiety is stopping you from living your life, being able to enjoy yourself and be present, then let us empower you through treatment.

Depression

"A good therapist fights darkness, and seeks illumination” Irvin Yalom

Are you feeling low? Are you finding it difficult to get motivated? Whilst there may be times where everyone feels sad or down, if you are experiencing these feelings for long periods of time and have lost enjoyment or interest in usual activities then you may be experiencing depression.

If you are experiencing depression or a mood disorder, which is interfering with your everyday life, then we would like to support you in finding your light. At Illuminate, we recognise that thoughts, feelings and behaviours all impact on your overall wellbeing. We utilise evidence based best practice, as well as incorporating movement, mindfulness and overall health to treat depression or mood disorders.
